This week we talk about Annihilation. Some homework is required. We also talk about Ghost Busters (1984) editing issues.
Ed’s Review: Back from Annihilation. Stars Natalie Portman and is directed by Alex Garland. It’s based on a series of books. It’s hard to describe what it’s about. Meteor lands at a lighthouse and a field starts growing around it. Natalie Portman is part of a team that goes in to investigate. Crazy stuff happens. I would say to better enjoy the film you may want to do some homework. First is watch Ex Machina, this way you will be prepared for the style of storytelling, that and it’s a good movie. Second, listen to this episode of Big Picture Science http://radio.seti.org/episodes/Cell_Cell_ it may give you some idea of what is going on. I really liked the film, but I can see why others may hate it. I call this a riptide movie. In that it’s best not to fight it, just let the movie take you where it’s going. Don’t try too hard to figure it out. It will get there. 9/10
Bob’s Review: It’s an acid trip of a movie that after it was done I wasn’t so sure about but the more I piece what happen together in my head the more I realize how good of a movie this is. I feel this movie requires a bit of time to let what happen wash over you and with that time I give it an 8/10.
